Strength Training for Swimmers Clinic

By coach nate, March 23, 2010 1:51 pm

Many swimmers do not understand how important strength is to excellent swimming — not only for power, speed, and endurance, but also for injury prevention. Unfortunately, solid strength training is an oft-overlooked component of the Masters Swimmer’s workout regimen, especially among distance swimmers.

Minuteman Masters in conjunction with Bosse Sports is hosting a strength training for swimmers clinic on Saturday May 15, from 4:15-6:00pm. Teaching the clinic is Peter Helliwell, a 15+ year veteran strength trainer with a specialty in corrective exercise and strength and conditioning. Peter is a triathlete himself and is excited to work with swimmers to improve their “water game” through strength training. In addition to all of these things, he is one of only two trainers in the State who is certified by the International Youth Conditioning Association.  The exercises taught will not only improve power generation and transfer in the water, but will go a long way toward preventing shoulder injuries as well.  Many of these exercises can be performed in your own home with minimal equipment.  Please wear clothing appropriate for a weight room that allows lots of range of motion.

Date: Saturday May 15, 2010, 4:15-6:00pm
Location: Bosse Sports Club, 141 Boston Post Road, Sudbury, MA 01776
Registration: $50 before May 10, $55 May 10 and after. Coaches $45.  Call Bosse Sports to register: 978-443-4613 Space is limited to allow plenty of individual attention, so register early! Because of Peter’s experience working with youth, this clinic will also be open to high school age swimmers.

Great Bay Masters needs your help!!

By coach nate, March 2, 2010 11:15 am

Hello all,

As some of you may know, in the current municipal budget the Portsmouth, NH Indoor Pool is scheduled to be closed on July 1, 2010. The pool is the hub pool for Great Bay Masters and has hosted several SCM mini meets over the years. The loss of this pool would severely cripple the Great Bay group.

The group working to keep the pool alive has set up a Facebook group called “Save the Portsmouth Indoor Pool!”. It would be helpful, if other members of the New England swimming community would simply join the Facebook group as a way of showing support. If you could join and encourage others to join it would be greatly appreciated.

The local media has been very active on this issue and is monitoring the Facebook page, so writing comments to the “wall” supporting the importance of a community pool will help. An important argument made by the “kill the pool” people is that the facility is in horrible shape, so any comments that include references to your experiences with the quality of the facility would also help.

Thanks,

Paul Griffin
