Clinics

Swimmers of all abilities are invited to attend a clinic hosted by the New England Masters (www.swimnem.org) workout group at Percy Walker Pool, St. George Street, in Duxbury. The clinic will be held on Sunday, December 7th from 9am to 11am. The cost is $25.00 per swimmer, and will be limited to 24 swimmers. Coach Jeff Rosen, who has 30+ years of coaching experience from US Swimming Age Group through NCAA Division I, will lead the clinic. Freestyle will be emphasized as well as starts and turns. Other strokes may be covered depending on time. Duxbury Masters meets at Percy Walker Pool every Sunday at 5pm with different levels of workout intensity available. Masters Swimming (www.usms.org) is for people ages 18 and up. Many members swim for fitness; some for triathlon training; some for competition and masters swim meets. To register for the clinic, please call Katherine Kardok at 781-659-7540 or email swimschool@juno.com. To become part of this small and friendly group, just come at 5pm on Sunday.

Latest news from the NEM Video Clinic held on Martha’s Vineyard

The NEM Video Clinic team is starting its second season. If you like “On Demand” on your cable TV, you will love “Clinics on Demand.” We come to your pool at your time and will provide as Traci Grilli says “the most effective swim clinic I have ever gone to”. Individual cost for the four-hour clinic is $50, plus any pool rentals and guard fees that must be covered directly by the sponsoring club.

The team consists of Bill Ewan, Mike Ross and Bob Boder. They have similar backgrounds including National and NEM top ten finishes and coaching YMCA teams. Plus, Mike holds many national and world records.

The primary clinic objectives are:
• Provide the latest in technical stroke instruction to swimmers
• Bring our expertise to help improve your program.
• Show the value of using video analysis to improve strokes
• Provide a personal DVD with each participant’s movie clips and a stroke critique.

The clinic addresses four workout group needs. These are:
1. Demonstrating video options available to practice groups.
2. Leave media with the practice groups to use for their own analysis
3. Do stroke analysis as needed while on the pool deck and during video reviews.
4. Provide coaching to groups that operate without a coach.

We emphasize whatever needs are most important to the group. At the end of the session, we leave above and underwater videos of each swimmer and two documents. The documents cover the options for using video equipment, best practices, sample clinic agendas and strokes basics. Sessions usually start with camera work. Bob uses an underwater camera hooked up to a TV with a VHS recorder and a Handicam to produce an above water DVD of the same swims. At the same time Bill uses two digital cameras to capture video underwater. These clips are captured from the center of the pool for the side shots and from the back and front. We are now able to take movie clips of all four strokes. We can also capture some dives and turns. This greatly increases the across- the-board impact of the clinic. Our experience allows us to see something wrong and capture it.

Bill’s digital cameras bring a new dimension to collecting video images. These cameras record HDTV quality movie clips for uploading to a computer. We do frame-by-frame analysis at the clinics directly from the cameras. Over the weeks following the clinic each swimmer receives a DVD along with a critique of each stroke, dive, or turn, along with suggestions for improvements.
Contact Bill at W1VH@cox.net for more information or to arrange a clinic.

A sponsoring swim group must arrange for pool use. Clinics are limited to 12 swimmers due to the extensive photographing and analysis time. Individuals who do not swim with a group are welcome to organize a group for a clinic. Small groups are encouraged to combine for a clinic. To attract independent swimmers consider posting on the NEM web site that you are looking for additional participants.
