NEM Swimming Community,

Fall promises to be another eventful time for the ever growing NEM masters swimming. The LMSC now numbers 1921 vs 1798 at the end of last year!

The first SCM meet is coming up on Oct. 21st in the new 8-lane 25 meter pool at Beede Center. Should be a pretty fast pool – an opportunity to swim some early potential TT times.   See the Events page for the entry form.

This meet will be followed by Wheaton (11/3), Portsmouth (11/10), and culminating with the NEM SCM Championship at BU (12/14-16). The SCY Championship at Harvard is currently scheduled for March 27-30, 2008 and the LCM Championship for June 20-22, 2008 in Middlebury, VT.

I am pleased to announce that Mike Ross, our multiple world-record holder, has joined the highly successful team of Bob Bolder and Bill Ewan running stroke clinics. They are filming with several cameras, providing HDTV quality films of
your swims, above and below the water. Read the glowing review of their last clinic in Londonderry on the NEM website (http://www.swimnem.org/wordpress/). Coaches should contact Bill Ewan (W1VH@cox.net) to schedule a clinic.

The USMS 2007 SCY Top-Ten has been published with many NEM’s, as always.  You can find the most updated copy at our Records page. Please email me with details of any errors/omissions.

Nate has  added a section for info on the Worlds next year in Perth, Australia (http://www.swimnem.org/wordpress/perth/). We are looking for a volunteer, who is planning to attend, to coordinate the flow of information in NEM for this event.

The NEM Board of Directors will meet on Oct. 5 and all members are invited to attend. Details will be forthcoming shortly.

President – NEMSC

Jarrod Shoemaker Races to an Olympic Berth!

By coach nate, September 16, 2007 4:04 pm

Minuteman Masters Swim Club member Jarrod Shoemaker has earned a spot on the 2008 United States Olympic Team by racing across the finish line as the 1st American finisher in the 2007 Beijing BG Triathlon World Cup. Placing 11th overall. Shoemaker finished in 1:49:44 (swim 17:55, bike 59:7, run 31:37). The impressive field of athletes included American Olympians Hunter Kemper (2000, 2004) and Andy Potts (2004). Shoemaker had the race of a lifetime beginning with an amazing swim keeping pace with the world’s elite. On the bike Shoemaker jockeyed amongst fellow Americans Doug Friman, Matt Reid, and Brian Fleischmann playing it safe in a dangerous pack of over fifty athletes. In thrilling fashion Shoemaker made his move on the third of four laps on the run picking off Kemper and then Potts. Shoemaker is the first New England Masters Swim Club athlete to earn a spot on the US Olympic Team. Shoemaker is the first of Minuteman Olympic trial qualifiers to advance to the games. Prior Minuteman Olympic trial qualifiers have included Abigail Clarke (swimming; 2000) and Karen Smyers (triathlon; 2000,2004). Congratulations Jarrod – New England will be watching!!!
