A few words about Tom…

One of the unfortunate consequences of being part of an organization that embraces the philosophy of swimming for life is that occasionally we recognize the loss of a close friend and a dear member of our Masters Swimming family.  Today is one of those occasions where we recognize the passing of Tom Lyndon.

I will remember Tom as an athlete and a volunteer who brought commitment, vision, passion and humor to Masters and helped to shape the personality of today’s USMS. Tom could be counted on to lend a hand or to share an opinion, a joke, his leadership, his talent and his youthful exuberance.

In my 25 plus years of Masters Swimming I have been blessed by Tom’s friendship and camaraderie, and I will cherish memories of his wry humor, quick smile and zeal. Tom’s presence has been a positive influence to many members of our Masters family; his passing leaves a void that will be very difficult to fill.

My prayers go out to Tom’s immediate and Masters families as we grieve our loss.

Thank you for sending me the sad news of Tom’s passing.  He always was so kind to me throughout our many years swimming.   I will try and swim my best this weekend at Bowdoin in memory of  Tom.  What a special person he was to world of swimming.   He will be sadly missed by all.

I’m shocked and saddened by the news. It was only a couple weeks ago that I was exchanging e-mails with Tom.  I always admired and respected Tom – and a lot of the time I surprised him by agreeing with what he had to say about the magazine. That is very sad.  He was a nice man.  After one of our USMS conventions in San Diego, it turned out that Tom and I were on the same flight.  The plane made a stop in Kansas City and then continued on to New Hampshire.  I sat with him for part of the flight and chatted.  He was very intelligent and interesting.

Very sad.  One can only hope that he and Dot Donnelly now have an amazing infinity pool of their own, and do nice easy workouts together. We need to do something – Tom Lyndon Birthday Meet at MIT and we bring back all the old timers, Scholarship, Award?  Something!  When I’m done being very sad.

Dear NEMMYs,

I just received the sad news about Tom Lyndon.  I cannot tell you how shocked and sad I was to read it.  I still think of Tom as a vibrant 50-something year old, swimming his heart out.  Luckily, he and I have shared some email exchanges this past year and he knew how much I thought of him.  He was a very special man.  As I read Barr’s email, I was reminded of the wonderful years we all shared together in the early 80s, and what a magical group we all were back then.  Time has passed and some of us have moved to places far from Boston, but it is with the fondest memories that I think of all of you and the fun we had together.  If anyone talks to Isabel, please give her my condolences and love.  To all of you, I hope you are well.  At a time like this it is important to remember friends from the past and only hope that our paths will cross someday soon.

What sad news.  Tom was one of the people I remember meeting at my first convention.  He was such a nice guy.  I guess this is going to start happening more as our early leaders age.  This is a great loss to USMS.  Tom has been a friend to many of us over the years.

Tom Lyndon, a long-time leader in New England and USMS Masters Swimming, died last Tuesday unexpectedly while visiting family in Seattle to celebrate his 75^th birthday.

Over a 30-year period of involvement in Masters Swimming, Tom held virtually every important volunteer position in New England swimming, including both President of NEM and Chairman of the NE-LMSC. Tom was probably best known for his long-time service as NEM News editor, during which time the publication won national recognition for excellence. Tom was present at virtually ever major NE meet, in more recent years, as a photographer who chronicled the accomplishments of the many young, and not so young, faces of swimmers that later appeared in NEM News. Tom was also standout swimmer with setting numerous New England sprint records and earning the USMS Individual All American award in 1978. He will be dearly missed by the many who experienced his pure love of masters swimming.

The North Shore Swim Club would like to offer practice sessions to Master swimmers, triathletes, and fitness swimmers. These practices will be great for swimmers preparing for the upcoming New England Masters Championship, or for adults looking for an early morning workout!

Practices will be at Salem State College on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday mornings from October 30 – November 29, 2006.

The Monday and Wednesday practices will be 5:45 AM- 7:15AM.

The Saturday morning practices will be 9:00-10:30 AM.
Specific Dates: October 30, November 1,4,6,8,13,15,18, 20,22,27,29 (No November 11 or 25)
Cost: 10.00 per drop in per practice or 60.00 for all practices in full before October 30, 2006. Please make checks payable to “North Shore Swim Club”
Insurance: All swimmers must be USA Master Swimming registered.
Coaches: Tony Padvaiskas and /or Dan Warner on Monday/ Wednesday. Jenny Luker and/ or Bob Seltzer on Saturday.
